hate -> luv

i was thinking about this a bit earlier but suddenly it's the end of the day so i'll leave it short so i can go home...

i was listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and rocking out to "black tongue" when i had a sudden flashback to the first time i heard them.

god i hated her voice and didn't see anything special about they lyrics... now, as i've found today, i really really like these guys (at least this album)... what bands did you absolutely hate initially and now find yourself loving?

Other notable ones:
Cursive
Good Life
Kings of Leon
Bright Eyes
The Dears
Neutral Milk Hotel

Oooh yes there are quite a few of those...but my brain is desperate desperate desperate to go home and testing for my release doesn't start for another 1/2 hour (who thought it was a good idea to show up at 8am knowing i'd be here late today??) so for now i seem to be at a loss….

i will say that what i really hate is the opposite problem...you know when you hear one song from a band you've never heard before and you LOVE it and CANNOT wait to go buy all of their albums, their t-shirts and tickets to follow them around the world. You rush out and get a CD or order it online get convinced by Amazon to ship it extra fast, no matter what the cost. You open it up, stick it in your computer/CD player and get right to that one amazing song you heard...it was just as good as the last time you heard it...yay! what a great purchase you just made! Then excitedly you skip back to the beginning to enjoy the CD in its complete wonderfulness. Hmmm...that first track does not have you convinced, why don't we skip it for now...ooooh...that second one is quite annoying...okay, we'll go back to that, let's go ahead... and it continues from there until you finally realize that this band is destined to be a "one hit wonder" in your book. so yes, that is what i hate...way for me to ruin the happiness of the post by bitching about this instead…I promise lists and lists of bands I slowly, happily fell in love with as soon as I'm out of this wonderful land of cubicles and people who hate their lives...

I've got to say, this post really struck a chord in me. No musical pun intended.

When I was in Scotland, my ex used to expose me to all sorts of bands that I thought were horrible... I later realized that I hadn't given them much of a chance. I wish I could blame my close-minded outlook on some unconscious desire to spite her or make her feel foolish; in actuality, I didn't listen to the bands because my tastes were in a different place. An immature place (which is where they belonged at the time).

Here's a list off the top of my head:
-Mum
-Superchunk
-Stephen Malkmus (stuck on Pavement)
-Neutral Milk Hotel
-Bright Eyes (still hit or miss)
-The Magnetic Fields
-The Buzzcocks

There are a lot more. My brain is fried. I'm not even sure if this list is valid. I don't necessarily LOVE the listed bands, but I certainly don't hate them anymore. Also, there are too many emotions mixed up there to logically and rationally sort out what I liked and what I didn't.

My impetuous album purchases are rare, so I can't completely agree with Mau, mainly because I'm unfamiliar with the situation. If I bought a CD, however, and it all sucked, I'd fucking be pissed. Like the time I threw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs CD out of my car window.

Basura!

mau.. this woudl be a good post actually cause i can think of a ton of bands that have one or two really great songs that everyone should seek out even though the album sucks..

the most recent was Stablio. If you go to their website one of the songs i really like is the first one that plays.. checkout "flawed design", "if it was up to me" and "don't look in their eyes"

addendum: it looks like if you go to the album section of that page you can listen to all their songs off of "happiness and disaster"
